ChatGPT Ads for Shopify: how to advertise inside an AI conversation

ChatGPT Ads app for a Shopify store

Until now, talking to an AI and seeing ads were two separate things. In September they merged: OpenAI and Shopify launched an app that places your products into ads inside the ChatGPT conversation itself.

This is OpenAI's first official commerce partnership, and Shopify is the first platform in it. It is worth understanding what it actually is - and why there is no need to rush.

What is ChatGPT Ads?

ChatGPT Ads is a free app on the Shopify App Store. Once installed, you connect an existing ChatGPT ad account or create a new one straight from the Shopify admin. Your product catalog then syncs automatically to ChatGPT Ads Manager.

From there it follows familiar advertising logic: you build a campaign, set a budget, and your products appear during conversations as labelled ads. Performance shows up in the same Shopify admin.

OpenAI also introduced sponsored agents - after clicking an ad, a shopper can start a conversation with a business-sponsored agent instead of simply landing on a product page. In practice, the ad becomes the start of a conversation rather than a link.

Ads and organic mentions are not the same thing

ChatGPT already suggested products during conversations, based on what it finds about them online. That has not gone anywhere and stays free.

What is new is a paid layer next to it: ads that are labelled as ads and that you pay for. The two complement each other but do not replace each other - if your product data is messy, paid ads will not fix that.

Where ChatGPT Ads are available?

ChatGPT Ads runs in self-service mode across 52 countries, and Europe was added at the end of August. The Shopify app rolled out in the US on September 18, and from September 23 it expands into other markets where ChatGPT Ads already operates.

This is a rare case where a new advertising platform reaches a European merchant at almost the same time as an American one. Usually that gap is a year or two.

The launch was rough

Here is the part you will not find in the official announcements. Early App Store reviews are still poor, two complaints come up repeatedly:

  • Regional targeting. Merchants report they cannot target a specific region - a campaign covers the whole market. If your buyers are in one or two countries, that matters.
  • Catalog sync. Some stores report that products arrive in ChatGPT Ads Manager incompletely or with errors.

None of this is surprising - it is what the first months of any ad platform look like. But it does change the answer to "should I join now".

In its first months a new ad platform is an experiment, not a channel. It is too early to plan a budget around it.

How to start with ChatGPT Ads?

  1. Install it and look around. The app is free and installing it commits you to nothing. It is worth seeing how your catalog looks on the ChatGPT Ads Manager side.
  2. Check that products synced correctly. If the sync is partial, better to find out now than after you have committed a budget.
  3. Clean up your product data. This is the important one. An AI recommends a product based on what you wrote about it - a clear title, an accurate description, correct price and availability do more than any campaign setting.
  4. Test with a small budget. If you decide to try it, spend an amount you can afford to lose while learning.
  5. Wait for regional targeting. If you sell in one small market, this is probably the deciding factor - without it, a campaign will waste money.

Why it matters more than it looks

This app alone will not move your numbers this quarter. But the direction is clear: more shoppers start their search in an AI conversation rather than in Google, and that conversation now has an advertising model.

For stores this means what the arrival of SEO once meant: the winners are those whose product data is tidy, structured and readable by a machine. Whether or not you pay for ads, an AI knows exactly as much about your product as you wrote down.
