Since October 1, 2026, Shopify store design can be built in a new space called Canvas. Instead of editing one page after another, your entire store opens in a single infinite workspace: you can view it from above, zoom into any detail and change it directly, or simply tell the Sidekick assistant what you want.
There is one essential condition worth knowing up front. Canvas does not yet support Markets, translations or third-party themes. For most stores selling in two languages or across several markets, that means one thing: worth a look, not worth moving your store.
What is Shopify Canvas?
Shopify Canvas is a store design space introduced on October 1, 2026, in which every page of a store is laid out in one interactive workspace. Changes can be made by clicking an element directly or by handing them to the Sidekick artificial intelligence assistant.
Shopify product lead Jordan Graham describes it this way:
"Canvas lays out every page of a store in one visual workspace, where merchants can edit directly or describe what they want and have Sidekick build it." - Shopify Dev Community
In practice, Canvas lets you:
- pan across every page of your store and zoom in on any detail;
- see Sidekick's changes land in real time - from a single section to a store-wide redesign;
- preview the store with working buttons and animations rather than a static image;
- check immediately how a page looks on different screen sizes.
How is Canvas different from the regular theme editor?
The regular Shopify theme editor shows one page template at a time, while Canvas shows the whole store as a single surface. The difference is not only visual: Canvas themes are not tied to theme author updates, so they work as a standalone design rather than as a version of a purchased theme.
Shopify positions Canvas as a direction, not an extra button. The company calls it "the foundation for a new way for merchants to build storefronts", where themes become a starting point rather than a finished result. That suggests Canvas is meant to become the default editor over time.
Does Canvas work with your current theme?
Canvas does not yet work with third-party Theme Store themes - exactly the kind a large share of stores run on. You can create a new Canvas theme or duplicate an existing Shopify official or custom-built theme; the original theme stays untouched in the old editor.
You will find Canvas under Online Store > Themes. It matters that duplicating creates a separate theme: you work on a copy, and your live store stays exactly as it was until you publish the new version. There is no risk in experimenting.
Shopify openly admits compatibility is unfinished, and hints that it is reconsidering the role of the Theme Store itself in this new environment.
Why is Canvas not yet suitable for multi-language stores?
Canvas currently does not support Markets, translations, rollouts, app blocks or app embeds. For a store running in two languages or selling across several EU markets, that effectively closes the door for now.
One more limitation adds to it: Canvas themes do not receive theme updates. If you moved a live store into Canvas today, you would lose the translation layer, the markets logic and the theme author's fixes alike.
The app situation is equally clear - Shopify states it directly:
"Canvas doesn't support theme app extensions yet. We expect to support theme app extensions before Canvas becomes the default editor." - Shopify Dev Community
In other words, if your store runs a reviews widget, a parcel locker selector or a subscriptions block, those simply will not be there in a Canvas theme yet.
What to do now
Canvas is at an early stage, so the sensible strategy is to get familiar without rushing.
- Duplicate a theme and play. Create a Canvas copy and try changing a few sections. You risk nothing and you will see where things are heading.
- Do not move your live store. If you use Markets, translations or even one app with a storefront block, wait.
- Check how dependent you are on a third-party theme. If your design leans heavily on a purchased theme's features, the future move will be a project rather than a button click.
- For new projects, it is worth considering. When building a store from scratch for one market and one language, Canvas may already be the faster route.
If you are not sure how much your design depends on your theme and apps, a Shopify store audit is the way to find out. And if you work across several markets and languages, it pays to set up your localization structure now so that a future move to Canvas breaks nothing.
Frequently asked questions
Does Canvas cost extra?
Shopify has not announced a separate price for Canvas and has not named plan restrictions. It was introduced as part of the platform and is rolling out gradually to existing stores from October 1, 2026.
Will Canvas replace the regular theme editor?
For now both work side by side. Shopify talks about a point when Canvas becomes the default editor, but has given no date and plans to fix app compatibility first.
Can you go back to the old theme?
Yes. A Canvas theme is created as a separate copy and the original theme stays in the old editor. Until you publish the Canvas version, shoppers see the same store as before.
When will Canvas support translations and Markets?
Shopify has not announced a date. The company promises app support before Canvas becomes the default editor, but there is no specific commitment yet for Markets and translations.
