A refreshed Shopify sign-in page - now customizable in the editor
The customer sign-in page is one of those surfaces every buyer sees but few merchants think about designing. Until now, Shopify offered a standard form with no visual customization options. As of May 20, that has changed.
Shopify introduced a fully refreshed sign-in page for customer accounts - featuring a new two-column layout and the ability to customize it directly in the checkout editor.
What changed visually?
The new design moves the sign-in form to the left, while the right side now features a customizable background image. This lets merchants strengthen their brand presence in a space that used to be just a plain white form.
Visually, the page now looks more professional and gives stores a chance to stand out before the buyer even logs in.
What can you customize?
The most important change is that the sign-in page is now editable directly in the checkout and accounts editor. This means you can:
- Choose a background image for the right column
- Adjust styling elements and colors
- Sync shared settings across all checkout surfaces
- Preview changes before publishing
For deeper customization, the Checkout And Accounts Configuration API is available - the same tool that handles checkout customization.
Who benefits most?
This update is most valuable for merchants who care about consistent brand presentation across all buying stages. Especially:
- Premium brands - if you invest in visual identity, the sign-in page no longer has to look like a generic template.
- Stores with active customer accounts - if buyers regularly log in, this page becomes an important touchpoint.
- B2B stores - where wholesale customers sign in to access their pricing and catalogs, a professional sign-in page builds trust.
Important: requires the latest version
This feature only works with the latest version of customer accounts. If your store still uses legacy customer accounts, you will need to upgrade first. Shopify provides a migration guide, and the process is usually straightforward.
The sign-in page is the first thing a returning customer sees. Now it can look as professional as the rest of your store.
What to do?
If you are using the new customer accounts, you can find the sign-in page customization in the checkout and accounts editor. If you still have the legacy version, it is worth considering the migration - the new version offers more benefits beyond just design.
