Where should the Add to cart button go on a Shopify product page?

UX Tips & tricks: ADD TO CART button

The position of the Add to cart button is one of the cheapest conversion levers in a Shopify store. The rule is simple: it must be visible without scrolling, right below the price and the variant picker - not below a long description.

Below: exactly where to place it, when Buy now is worth enabling, whether to put buttons on collection pages, and what to fix on mobile.

Where should the Add to cart button go?

Right below the price and the variant picker, so it is visible without scrolling. If it sits below the description, the shopper has to hunt for it - and some of them simply don't, and leave.

In practice the order on a product page is almost always the same:

  1. Product title
  2. Price
  3. Variant picker (size, colour, volume)
  4. Add to cart
  5. A short summary or delivery information
  6. Full description, specifications, reviews

In Shopify themes this order can be changed in the theme editor by dragging blocks in the product page section - no developer needed.

Is the Buy now button worth enabling?

Usually yes, but not always. Buy now (Shopify calls it an accelerated checkout button) takes the shopper straight to payment with saved details - Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal. For a single-product purchase that is the fastest route.

There are three limitations worth knowing before you switch it on:

  • The cart is skipped. So are cart upsells and the discount code field.
  • One variant only. Shopify's documentation notes a customer can buy two large t-shirts, but not a large and a small variant at the same time.
  • Limited styling. Branded buttons (Shop Pay, PayPal) cannot be restyled.

A practical rule: if your average cart is a single item, Buy now is almost always useful. If you earn from multi-item carts and upsells, test it - it may reduce average order value. Details in the Shopify documentation.

Should you add the button to collection pages?

Yes, if shoppers already know the products and often buy several. Then they don't need to open each product page - they add straight from the list. Most Shopify themes offer this as a quick add setting.

It doesn't fit when the product needs a choice - sizes, colours or configuration. Quick add then either opens an extra modal or forces a blind choice, and the experience gets worse. For a clothing store with a size grid it usually hurts; for a coffee or cosmetics store with repeat purchases it helps.

What is a sticky add to cart and do you need one?

A sticky add to cart is a bar with the price and button that stays visible while the shopper scrolls the product page. It helps when the page is long: with specifications, reviews and a photo gallery, the shopper ends up far from the main button.

Some Shopify themes include it, others need an app or a small theme addition. If your product page fits in one or two screens, a sticky bar adds nothing - it is for long pages.

How should the button work on mobile?

On mobile the button must be large enough and within the thumb zone, in the lower part of the screen. The recommended minimum touch target is around 44 pixels, so people browsing one-handed on the move can hit it.

Another common mobile issue: the sticky bar, chat widget and cookie notice can overlap at the bottom of the screen. It is worth checking on a phone whether anything covers the button.

What to avoid

  • The button below the description. The most common mistake and the easiest to fix.
  • Too little contrast. If the button is the same colour as everything else, it stops being the primary action.
  • Several buttons of equal weight. Add to cart, Buy now and Save all equally prominent - the shopper doesn't know which to press.
  • No feedback after the click. The shopper must see the item landed in the cart, through a cart drawer or a clear message.
  • A disabled button with no explanation. If the item is out of stock, say so instead of showing a grey button.

Frequently asked questions

Where should the Add to cart button be on a Shopify product page?

Right below the price and the variant picker, visible without scrolling. Description, specifications and reviews come after the button, not before it.

Does the Buy now button reduce average order value?

It can, because it skips the cart along with upsells and the discount code field. For stores where people usually buy one item it is useful; where revenue comes from multi-item carts, test it first.

Can you move the Add to cart button without a developer?

Yes. In the Shopify theme editor you can drag product page blocks and change their order. A developer is only needed for custom work, such as a sticky bar in a theme that has none.

Is quick add on collection pages worth enabling?

Worth it if products have no variants or customers buy repeatedly. If a size or colour must be chosen, quick add gets in the way more often than it helps.
