Different return windows for every market: Shopify now allows overrides

Return windows set by market in Shopify

Since September 29, 2026, your Shopify store no longer has to apply one return window to every product and every market. A return window override can be set for a specific collection, product or even an individual variant - and, most importantly for cross-border selling, separately for each market.

In practice this means you can keep the legally required window for EU shoppers, offer a competitive 90 days in the US, and apply a shortened 14-day window to perishable or seasonal goods. All in one store, with no extra apps.

What are Shopify return window overrides?

Return window overrides are a Shopify feature available since September 29, 2026 that assigns a different return window to specific collections, products or variants than the store default. An override can be either longer or shorter than the general rule.

The Shopify changelog puts it directly:

"You can now set return window overrides by market for specific collections, products, or variants." - Shopify Changelog

The default return window does not go anywhere - it still applies to every item that does not match an override.

How do you set different return windows for different markets?

Market-specific return rules are configured in the Shopify admin under Settings > Policies > Return and cancellation rules. There you select the specific market rules you want to modify and point them at a target collection, product or variant.

The logic is layered:

  1. The default policy applies to all markets until you create an override.
  2. A market rule overrides the default where it is set - for the EU, for example.
  3. A product or collection override within that market overrides the market rule too.

The window itself can be 14, 30, 90 days, unlimited or custom. You separately choose when counting starts: from each item's delivery, or from delivery of the last item in the order - the second option is more practical when an order ships in several parcels.

Worth knowing: Shopify documentation still marks market-specific return rules as an early-access feature, so they may not appear in your store immediately.

What happens when a product matches several overrides?

When a product matches several return window overrides at once, Shopify applies the shortest one. A final sale designation takes precedence over any override - those items cannot be returned or cancelled regardless of windows.

This rule matters in practice. If an item sits in both a "Season sale" collection with a 14-day override and a "Premium" collection with a 90-day override, the shopper gets 14 days. So before building overrides, it pays to work out which collections overlap.

What you cannot do

A few limitations Shopify spells out in its return rules documentation:

  • Bundles cannot be marked as final sale.
  • You cannot mix products and collections in the same final sale list.
  • A restocking fee is shown to the shopper but deducted from the refund manually.

How does this fit the EU 14-day right of withdrawal?

The EU right of withdrawal sets a minimum 14-day window that overrides cannot shorten for EU shoppers. Return window overrides are useful here in the other direction: they let you comply in the EU market while offering longer or shorter windows elsewhere based on business logic.

If you have not configured the EU requirements yet, start there - we covered it in detail in EU right of withdrawal in Shopify. Build overrides only once the foundation is in place.

Note that if you also sell in a physical store, return rules in Shopify POS require the POS Pro plan.

Where to start

Overrides are only useful when they reflect real business decisions. A practical order:

  1. Set the default window that suits most products and meets the strictest requirement across your markets.
  2. Create a market rule for EU shoppers if your main market is outside the EU.
  3. Apply shorter windows to seasonal, perishable or made-to-order goods.
  4. Check overlapping collections, because the shortest window will win.
  5. Update your return policy text so it matches what the system actually does.

Frequently asked questions

Is a specific Shopify plan required?

Shopify has not named plan restrictions for return window overrides. The one clear condition is that applying return rules in Shopify POS requires the POS Pro plan.

Does the shopper see a different window on the product page?

The rules apply primarily at the moment a return is requested in the customer account. To inform shoppers earlier, describe the differing windows on your return policy page or in the product description.

Do overrides work without self-serve returns?

Yes. Shopify states that return rules still apply when you process returns manually - self-serve returns simply let the shopper start the process themselves.

Can you set an unlimited return window?

Yes, unlimited is one of the options alongside 14, 30, 90 days and custom. It can also be applied as an override to a specific group of products.
